Terminally ill man marries longtime love in hospital as final wish comes true

After 20 Years, Maine-Area Couple Finally Weds — Together Through Terminal Cancer Diagnosis

A couple who first got engaged two decades ago finally exchanged vows last month, bringing their long-postponed wedding forward after the groom was told he had only weeks to live.

Dean Pennell, 63, and Kay Beaman, 62, were married on June 18 at Colchester Hospital in Essex, England, according to the news agency SWNS. The hospital ceremony came after Pennell, who has terminal cancer, received a devastating prognosis that made the couple decide there was no time left to wait.

The two met 24 years ago in Basildon, Essex, through their children. Pennell proposed early in their relationship, but with 10 children between them, wedding plans were repeatedly set aside in favor of providing for their growing family. As the years passed, life continued to fill with responsibilities, and the wedding never quite happened.

"He proposed when we first got together — but with 10 children between us, money would not allow," Beaman said.

The couple had been planning to marry this year, but when Pennell's health took a turn for the worse, they moved the timeline up. Hospital staff helped pull together a wedding in less than a week.

Beaman described the experience as one she had long imagined. "I am absolutely elated," she said. "We have waited a long time, and it's so special to be able to celebrate our marriage here, with our families."

All 10 of their children attended, along with some of their 18 grandchildren, filling the hospital room with the kind of noise and warmth that only a large family can bring.

In the days leading up to the ceremony, Beaman said her fiancé was counting down the hours. "He had been so excited in the lead-up to the wedding, and I would get a phone call from him at the hospital every morning telling me how many days there were to go until the wedding," she said.

On the day itself, Pennell was determined to be fully present. "When the day came, he was adamant, as difficult as it was, that he was going to stand up for as much of the ceremony as possible — and we had a lovely day," Beaman said. He was, she added, "exhausted afterward."

Pennell, a former electroplater, expressed gratitude for the effort made on his behalf. "It was absolutely brilliant," he said. "The staff worked really hard to organize the wedding."

Ward manager Lucy Everett said the event stood out as something special for the hospital team. "It has been a pleasure to be able to help Dean and Kay," she said. "It's rare that we get to celebrate a wedding at Colchester Hospital — it's a first for me."

The East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust gave the newlyweds a clock displaying the exact time they said "I do."

Beaman said her husband is now back home, and the two are settling into married life on their own terms. "Dean is now back at home, and we are living life to suit us," she said.
