Maine High School Baseball State Championships Set for Weekend
The 2026 Maine high school baseball season reaches its climax this weekend as 14 state champions will be crowned across all classes. Among the four baseball finals, several storylines stand out, from coaching farewells to highly anticipated rematches.
In Class A, Gorham (18-1) faces Bangor (16-3) on Saturday in what promises to be an emotional contest. Bangor head coach Dave Morris is retiring, and his team is determined to send him out with a championship. The Rams advanced by defeating North top seed Oxford Hills in the regional final, drawing eight walks during that performance. Lucas Rutherford is expected to start on the mound for Bangor, though he has shown some control issues in recent games. Gorham, representing the South, will counter with either Miles Brenner or Wyatt Washburn as their starting pitcher. The South champions faced elimination in the quarterfinals, trailing Falmouth 6-0 before a thunderstorm forced the game to be replayed, ultimately saving their season.
The Class B final features Fryeburg Academy (16-3) against Cony (17-2) in what could be the most competitive championship matchup. Both teams won their regional games by a combined margin of just five runs. Cony, from the North, edged Mount Desert Island 2-1 in the semifinals before defeating Hermon 4-2 in the regional final, with Ben Allen taking the pitching duties in the title game. Fryeburg, the South champion, eliminated Cape Elizabeth and then held off Greely 4-3 to advance.
Class C presents a rematch of last year's state final, with Monmouth Academy (18-1) defending its title against Washington Academy (18-1). Both teams lived up to preseason expectations with dominant campaigns. Monmouth outscored opponents 194-31 this season, while Washington Academy posted an even more impressive 228-21 margin. The Mustangs defeated Cony 12-11 in a crossover battle, and the Raiders topped MDI 11-1 and Ellsworth 6-1 during their run.
In Class D, Telstar (16-3) meets Fort Fairfield (17-0) in a battle between two of the state's most prolific offenses. Fort Fairfield enters undefeated with a .380 team batting average and 122 hits, while Telstar has accumulated 124 hits with a .297 average. The Tigers hold a significant advantage in doubles with 24 compared to Telstar's 15.
All four baseball championships will be decided over the weekend as Maine's top high school teams compete for state titles.
