Big hits with two-out RBI,” said Scarborough coach Wes Ridlon. “We had the opportunities to get the big hit and put some more runs on the board and we didn’t do that, and they did.” In a wacky day for Class A South baseball (see below), Thornton led 3-2 in the bottom of the third with the bases loaded and one out when rumbling thunder caused game officials to get the teams off the field. After the 45-minute delay ended, Scarborough starter Liam Vines finished a strikeout of Blake Bolduc and quickly got Colton Cross in an 0-2 hole. Cross fouled off several good pitches before delivering a sharp two-run single up the middle for a 5-2 lead. “I was just looking at the ball out of his hand and I got my pitch and hit it right up the middle,” Cross said. Thornton coach Jason Lariviere said of Cross, “he had a great at-bat and I knew momentum was going to swing one way or the other depending on how that at-bat went, because (if) they had gotten out of it, that would have been a huge momentum builder for them.” Advertisement Dominic Hussey reloaded the bases with a walk, and Carter Moody was hit by the first pitch thrown by Scarborough reliever Ryan Shugars to force in another run. Brayden Duane followed with another two-run single and Moody scored on a throwing error for a 9-2 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Thornton scored three times, with Moody finishing the rally with a two-out double to left center for runs 11 and 12. “I felt like just trying to get out of here and move on to the next game,” Moody said. “A clutch hit was it.” Moody, Thornton’s leadoff hitter and sophomore shortstop, was 3 for 3 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Beck Edgerly finished the win with a 1-2-3 top of the fifth, including snaring a liner up the middle by Finn Coburn for the first out. Edgerly allowed two unearned runs on two hits, though he did hit three batters. Parker Bjorklund was the first Thornton player to produce two-out runs, driving in a pair in the first inning after Moody was caught off second base but got out of it by stealing third. Moody had a two-out RBI double in the second inning. Advertisement AROUND THE REGION While Thornton was finishing its win, word spread quickly that the top three teams in A South were in trouble. A game between No. 8 Falmouth and No. 1 Gorham was postponed with Falmouth up 6-0 in the fourth inning. By rule, that game will start anew on Friday, but pitch counts will carry over. Then came word that No. 3 Cheverus was trailing No. 6 Sanford in the seventh inning and No. 2 South Portland was going extra innings in a scoreless game with No. 10 Noble. While Cheverus was able to rally to win in the eighth, Noble upset South Portland, 1-0, in eight innings. Thornton (13-5) will face the winner of the Falmouth-Gorham game on Saturday, at the higher remaining seed. “You see it in the playoffs, anyone can beat anyone,” Lariviere said. “There’s no game that’s going to be an easy win and you play each game as a must win.” Copy the Story Link Tagged: [scarborough red storm](https://www.pressherald.com/tag/scarborough-red-storm/), [thornton golden trojans](https://www.pressherald.com/tag/thornton-golden-trojans/) [![](https://w2pcms.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/10/2018/07/steve-craig-use-300x269.jpg?w=80)](https://www.pressherald.com/author/steve-craig) [Steve CraigStaff Writer](https://www.pressherald.com/author/steve-craig) Steve Craig reports primarily about Maine’s active high school sports scene and, more recently, the Portland Hearts of Pine men's professional soccer team.
