The Cape Elizabeth girls have a chance to return to the top. The Clippers beat Cape Elizabeth 5-0 to win the Class B South boys tennis title on Monday at Bates College. Yarmouth will try to win its seventh straight state title when it faces Hermon on Wednesday in Lewiston. “It feels great,” said Yarmouth senior Alexander Gordon. “We’ve been working pretty hard this season. We’ve had a lot of expectations the last couple of years. It puts a lot of pressure on the team. But we’ve managed to keep the focus on ourselves, and that takes some of the pressure off of us.” The Capers, meanwhile, beat Cony 3-2 to win the B South girls title. They will face North champion Waterville and try to win their first state title since 2016 on Wednesday. “We’ve had really good team morale, and I think that’s helped carry us through for a lot of these matches,” Cape Elizabeth senior Emma Gebhart said. Yarmouth (14-1) rolled to victory in the first three matches to secure the boys title. Aidan Forrest beat Matty Berman 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles; Aiden Brooks and Zach Young beat Leland O’Reilly and Thomas O’Reilly 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles; and John Nicholas and Pablo Sonenberg defeated Luke Schoenbean and Aman Khare 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. Staying on the front foot, I thought, was really good. (Smith) is a great player and always tough. The last time, we went to three sets. It’s always a pleasure to play him.” Cape Elizabeth finished 9-6, with three 5-0 losses to the Clippers. [Yarmouth beat Foxcroft Academy](https://www.sunjournal.com/2025/06/11/yarmouth-boys-lincoln-academy-girls-tennis-take-class-b-titles/) 5-0 for the state championship last season. “It’s always great to play another tough team, another tough program,” said Yarmouth head coach Gabe Gordon. “Cape Elizabeth has been improving over the last few seasons. Even in this season, you can see a lot of depth and growth in each of their players.” The Cape Elizabeth girls (12-3) also secured their win with three early victories. Sen Murdock beat Ava Habib 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, the team of Kaia Craig and Gillian Lench beat Rekah Goonesekere and Lucy Lord 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, and Noelle Mallory and Genny Carignan swept Olivia Folsom and Addie Cerrato 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. Advertisement “A lot of the girls worked hard over the winter,” said Lench, a senior. “Allegra, Sen and Emma all did (offseason work) and I think that really helped. We got a lot better.” The Rams (12-3) picked up wins from their top two singles players, Kira Gregor and Lilah Goldey. Gregor beat Emma Gabhart 6-0, 6-0, while Goldey beat Allegra Adler 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (5). Cape Elizabeth fell to Yarmouth in the semifinals round last season. The Capers beat the Clippers 3-2 to reach the regional final. “They’re too nice of girls (to have a chip on their shoulder),” said Cape head coach Sarah Boeckel. “There was more of a chip on my shoulder. They really wanted it this year. We felt like we could beat Yarmouth (in the semis), we felt like we could get here. I think they just really locked in by the end of the season.” The Capers and Waterville faced off in the 2021 Class B girls final. Waterville won 3-2.
