Yarmouth dominating, and other Maine high school football storylines for Week 7

Maine high school football enters a pivotal stretch as the regular season winds down, with several teams positioning themselves for playoff runs. In Class A South, undefeated squads have emerged as clear frontrunners, while elsewhere in the division, a program looking to reverse recent trends eyes a late surge. Meanwhile, in Class C, one offense has built its identity on balance, and another has spent the last two weeks proving a lopsided loss was merely a checkpoint rather than a sentence.

Yarmouth has built its season around defensive dominance and a balanced attack. The Clippers, playing eight-man football in Large School South, stand 6-0 and have outscored opponents 354 to 54. Their defense has been particularly stout, holding foes to roughly 150 total yards per contest and registering three shutouts while allowing just 14 points across most of the schedule. On offense, senior quarterback Iggy McGrath has thrown for 1,227 yards and 21 touchdowns without an interception, while junior running back Stephen Connolly, a transfer from NYA competing through a co-op, has rushed for 940 yards and 14 scores. Coach Nick Orsi said the group’s chemistry was evident from the start.

“We’re super excited about this group,” Orsi said. “We knew coming into the season it was going to be pretty special. We had a lot of players returning on the offensive side of the ball, including our quarterback, all our wide receivers. We added our running back, Stephen Connolly, to the mix this year. He’s a junior from NYA. He’s part of our co-op.”

Yarmouth’s only blemish on the scoreboard came in a game against Cape Elizabeth, and even then the defense has been “virtually flawless” outside of a rough first half and an opening-drive touchdown against Lake Region. The Clippers close the regular season this week against Orono and later Gray-New Gloucester.

Over in Class C, the Wells program is hoping its most recent results signal a turning point. After a 42-0 setback to Leavitt on Sept. 26, Warriors coach Tim Roche challenged his squad.

“I just said to them, ‘We either step up to this challenge in the next five games, or we just say, ‘Oh … we’re not very good,’” Roche said. “I think we’re good.”

Wells (4-2) has won its last two outings, defeating Gardiner 47-31 and Freeport 28-24. With three games remaining, the Warriors sit fifth in the Class C standings but could move into the top four — which would give them home-hosted quarterfinal action — with a strong finish. Their remaining schedule includes games against York, Nokomis, and Hampden Academy.

“Eight teams make the Class C postseason, and the top four host quarterfinals,” said Roche. “We’re focused on winning out and seeing where we land.”

At the other end of the Class C spectrum, Leavitt has operated exactly as its coach envisioned. The Hornets, 6-0 and ranked No. 1 in the Crabtree standings, have averaged 42 points per game behind an offense designed to spread the ball across multiple playmakers.

“Really, we just want to spread the ball around,” said coach Michael Hathaway following a season-opening win. “Whether it’s run or pass or whatever, we don’t want to be relying on any one thing. So I think you saw it tonight … a lot of different guys touching the ball.”

That philosophy has manifested weekly. Darren Flagg accounted for five touchdowns in the team’s first two games, then Landen Reny and Jeremiah McKenzie combined for five scores against Wells. In a more recent outing against Gardiner, Flagg found the end zone five times again — twice on runs, twice on receptions, and once on an interception return.

Leavitt hosts Nokomis Thursday night at 7 p.m. looking to close out the regular season on a high note.

As the final weeks approach, the playoff picture takes shape across multiple classes, with several programs still holding their fates in their own hands.
