She was born on Feb. 17, 1942, in Rochester, NY to Donald and Neva Nelson. Barbara married Warren E. Winslow, Jr on August 21, 1966; they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year. Warren and Barbara split their time between their homes in Augusta, Manchester and Piper Shores in Scarborough, Maine. Barbara graduated from John Marshall High School in Rochester, NY and Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology followed by the University of Pennsylvania with a Masters degree in Physical Therapy. Barbara was the first physical therapist at Maine General Hospital (formerly Augusta General) in 1967. She started her own business, Physical Therapy Associates, with a close friend, Nancy Schatz; a company they owned for more than 50 years. They serviced many school contracts in Augusta and surrounding schools. Barbara loved her dogs, especially her cairn terriers who traveled to many schools as part of the student’s therapy. Later in life, Warren and Barbara welcomed rescue dogs, Archie and Mouse, into their homes at Piper Shores and Manchester on Lake Cobbosseecontee. Barbara met her husband, Warren, at the University of Pennsylvania, while he was attending law school and she was completing her Masters degree. Barbara graduated in 1965 and Warren graduated in 1967. In 1970, they returned to Maine so Warren could join the law practice of George Wathen and Daniel Wathen, who later became Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Court. Barbara also supported Warren’s very successful forty-year career as a partner with the Portland and Augusta law firm of Pierce Atwood. Barbara was proud of her community service and throughout the years she was a member and leader of a variety of organizations, believing that a person must give back by getting involved. Barbara served on the Kennebec Valley Humane Society Board of Directors; the Maine General Board of Trustees and was an active participant raising money through the Foundation Board for the new hospital in Augusta, Maine General. When Warren and Barbara moved to Piper Shores they both became very active; Barbara served on various committees including Health and Quality of Life, hosting block parties and welcoming new residents. Barbara literally had hundreds of friends from Augusta to southern Maine and beyond. Throughout her life, Barbara enjoyed traveling with her friends around the world, especially with a close and dear friend Hanneke McQuoid. She experienced many amazing trips after retirement including Costa Rica, Argentina, Chili, Equador, Italy, The Netherlands, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Montenegro, Spain, France, Portugal, Russia, Morocco, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Tanzania, Japan, Indonesia, India, Bhutan, China, Tibet, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Turkey, and Peru. Of greatest importance to Warren and Barbara was their family. Barbara was especially proud of the accomplishments of her children, David, Elizabeth and Amy. She often commented how fortunate she and Warren were that their children each found success in their own way in Politics and Finance, Law and Nursing. Organizing family gatherings brought great pleasure and joy to Barbara especially at their Lakehouse in Manchester. The grandchildren loved to visit Grandpa and Grammie for a ride on the boat, taking turns on the tube and homemade meals, especially Grammie’s blueberry pancakes and chicken pie. Barbara will be sadly missed by her loving and devoted husband, Warren E. Winslow, Jr. of Manchester and Scarborough; her son and his wife, David and Kris of Augusta and Caribou, two daughters and their families, Elizabeth and Tim and their three daughters, Sophie, Lily and Lexi of Pleasanton, Calif. and Amy and her three children, twins Ryan and Marc and daughter Erin of Scarborough. Warren and Barbara loved to brag about their children and grandchildren. Barbara will also be sadly missed by her only sibling and brother, Tom and his wife Dawn and their family of Rochester, NY, along with her special nephews and nieces. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Donald and Neva Nelson of Rochester, NY, her in-laws Warren and Marguerite (Clifford) Winslow of Falmouth and her sister-in-law Nancy Elizabeth (Winslow) Woolger of Clinton, Michigan. The family wishes to express their immense appreciation for the care both Dad and Mom have received at Piper Shores. The family will be hosting a celebration of Barbara’s life at Piper Shores in Scarborough at a later date, to be announced. Burial will be at the Winslow family plot at Pine Grove Cemetery in Falmouth, Maine. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for a contribution in Barbara’s honor to a charity of your choice Copy the Story Link
